Game Creek Video, who will provide coverage of this year’s Super Bowl XLV, announced plans to use long-zoom lenses from Canon for all telephoto shots.

The company’s 100-times XJ100×9.3B long-zoom HD lenses will be mounted on all of the 18 fixed-position Sony HD field cameras. Portable cameras will use a mixture of the HJ22ex7.6B and HJ11×4.7B ENG-style lenses, and HJ21ex7.5B portable EFP lenses. According to Canon, the XJ100×9.3B is the industry’s first triple-digit long-zoom HD field lens.

“To my knowledge this is the first time that the Super Bowl has been done where all of the large box lenses were 100-bys, so it’s a great accomplishment for our company – and for Canon as well – that these lenses are in such demand and so sought after by the production teams that we deal with,” says Pat Sullivan, president of Game Creek Video.

Coverage of the big game is expected to reach over 100 million viewers.

OKLAHOMA CITY: Whether it’s on the gridiron, the baseball diamond, the basketball court, or other competitive arenas, the University of Oklahoma (OU) is going into the 2011 season with high expectations for its successful athletic programs. OU also has high standards for its in-house video coverage of these events, as evidenced by its recent addition of a half-dozen HD zoom lenses from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging. As part of its upgrade to full HD location and studio productions, OU chose Canon XJ86×13.5B extended telephoto and XJ86×9.3B long-zoom HD field lenses, two HJ14ex4.3B wide-angle portable HD zoom lenses, an HJ22ex7.6B long-zoom portable HD lens, and a KJ20×8.5B cost-effective portable HD zoom lens.

“Our video production philosophy is to bridge technology and tradition so that we can entertain, inform and inspire,” said Brandon Meier, executive director of video production for the OU Athletics Department. “We want to entertain our fans – watching on the big stadium screen and on TV at home – with HD video that educates them about our great traditions and inspires them to cheer on their team.”

OU’s new Canon lenses will be utilized in their new SoonerVision studios inside the football stadium. The studios are used to produce upwards of 100 broadcasts a year, as well as in-stadium entertainment and TV broadcasts. “We made an HD equipment investment that will have to last us 10 to 15 years,” Meier noted. “We have gone as high-end as our budget will allow on all of our newest equipment so we can produce broadcast quality HD productions for years to come.”

Leading the charge in providing coverage of dramatic up-close-and-personal OU sports coverage will be the university’s Canon XJ86×13.5B extended telephoto and XJ86×9.3B long-zoom HD field lenses. Both part of Canon’s DIGISUPER line of high-performance field (and studio) lenses, each XJ86 has built-in Shift-IS Image Stabilization technology, for obtaining steady images even at the furthest zoomed-in distances. The XJ86 model series is Canon’s most popular long-field HD zoom lens in the emerging fleets of HD mobile production facilities, and is used by producers for many leading U.S. sports telecasts. As with all Canon DIGISUPER lenses, the XJ86 features an advanced, computer-aided lightweight design, specialized multilayer coatings on each optical element, and Canon’s second-generation digital servo systems for improved ease of operation. This exclusive technology also provides: superb tactile control of zoom, iris, and focus; precision repeatability of settings; and microcomputer compensation of lens-focus breathing (the inadvertent alteration of field-of-view when camera operators adjust the focus control).

OU sports coverage will also have the benefit of two Canon HJ14ex4.3B wide-angle portable HD zoom lenses, which combine an extended 14x zoom range with a minimum focal length of 4.3mm and an angular field of view of 96.3 degrees at the wide end of the 16:9 HD aspect ratio. These performance specs make the HJ14 the widest-angle portable HD lens in the industry. The 14x zoom range of this lens reaches to 60mm (120mm with extender), which greatly expands creative options for the acquisition of crystal-clear, and virtually distortion-free HD video images. Canon’s mastery of computer-based optical design techniques and specialized multilayer optical coating technologies ensures excellent imaging performance without distortion for the HJ14, which Meier’s team will mount on portable EFP-style HD cameras deployed by OU’s mobile production vehicle.

Further extending OU’s creative production capabilities is its new HJ22ex7.6B portable HD zoom lens, the longest-focal-length portable HD production lens offered by Canon (without an image-stabilization system). A flexible, multipurpose lens exhibiting high optical performance and ease of operation, the HJ22 is designed for long-distance shooting combined with wide-angle capture (7.6mm field of view) in a lightweight (4 lbs.) form factor. An added advantage of the HJ22 is its Digital Drive unit that enables camera operators to precisely pre-set zoom position/speed, focus and iris settings, if desired. This feature is built into many Canon portable HD zoom lenses, including the HJ14ex4.3B described above.

The sixth Canon lens purchased as part of OU’s HD equipment upgrade, the KJ20×8.5B portable HD zoom lens, is part of Canon’s cost-effective HDgc lens series, which combines high picture quality, ease of use, and sophisticated operation for use with the new generation of affordable HD ENG/EFP-style camcorders. Compact and lightweight (2.8 lbs.), the KJ20 offers excellent optical performance and also features Canon’s exclusive Shuttle Shot function, an advanced servo system that enables camera operators to zoom back and forth between any two pre-set focal-length positions for added versatility in various production situations.

“When Sooner fans tune in to watch our games they expect to see the same level of quality that they see on network TV,” concluded Brandon Meier. “On the big screen live at the games, they also expect the best. They want to see the same quality they see on the big screens in pro football stadiums. That’s why we chose to invest in broadcast-quality equipment in all phases of our upgrade to HD.”

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.: Canon U.S.A., Inc., introduces a new-generation of super-telephoto lens, the XJ95×8.6B, which provides a combination of the widest angle of view of any HD field lens presently in the broadcasting industry with an augmented 95x focal range.

Canon says it developed the XJ95×8.6B lens in response to the evolving requirements of live, mobile-location HD productions. Canon’s XJ95×8.6B super-telephoto HD field lens is based upon a new design that is intended to deliver enhanced optical performance and extended operational flexibilities, said Larry Thorpe, Canon U.S.A.’s senior director of sales, Broadcast and Communications division. The lens has a 95x zoom ratio and the widest angle of view (58.3 degrees horizontal at 8.6 mm) of any field lens presently available, according to Thorpe. That combination offers a range of imaging possibilities unachievable with conventional field lenses, he says.

The XJ95×8.6B super-telephoto HD lens provides optical performance that has elevated over previous models, Canon says. The new lens is engineered with many of Canon’s most advanced technologies, including powerful optical design tools, new glass materials, and new exotic optical coatings. Canon’s proprietary large-diameter aspherical lens technology and new glass materials minimize lateral chromatic aberration, monochromatic aberrations, and geometric distortion that have always challenged large focal-length ranges. Significant reduction of these aberrations enhances the superb resolution and contrast in a manner that contributes to the capture of images with superb picture sharpness across the 16:9 HD image plane.

Improved performance in the new XJ95×8.6B super-telephoto HD lens is also provided in the form of operational ease through features such as constant angle focusing system (CAFS), the company says. To help counteract “breathing,” the phenomena known to change picture size/angle of view during a focusing operation, CAFS employs built-in 32-bit microcomputer control, the company says. The lens has improved digital servo systems using 16-bit miniature optical encoders for zoom, iris, and focus that significantly empower the camera operator in terms of ultra-slow to very high-speed zoom, high resolution control of both iris and focus, and highly precise repeatability of zoom and focus operations. Despite its augmented specifications, however, the new XJ95×8.6B remains similar in size and weight to Canon’s XJ86×9.3B/13.5B, facilitating easy panning and tilting operations.

An added benefit of the sophisticated zoom, focus and iris encoders built into the new XJ95×8.6B is the lens’ multiple support for discrete digital encoder outputs, analog outputs, and serial digital outputs, Canon says. That ability to share focus, iris, and zoom-position data makes the XJ95×8.6B compatible with many kinds of digital virtual studio systems; the lens easily adapts to these systems via Canon’s standard 20-pin lens-interface connector.

From Broadcast Engineering:

More than half of broadband Internet users watch television content that’s streamed online or on an alternate platform every week, according to a new study from Horowitz Associates.

The study, “Multiplatform Content & Services 2011,” found 54 percent of broadband Internet users turn to streaming or alternate platforms weekly for TV content and that nontraditional viewing totaled 10.8 hours a month, or 7 percent of total viewing time.

Younger broadband Internet users (18- to 34-year-olds), spend more time consuming TV content across all platforms. Ten percent of the time this group spends viewing content is done via nontraditional means. A total of 74 percent of the same group reported watching nontraditionally weekly. This same group also reported spending 18 hours more monthly viewing TV content in general — an average of 167.7 hours — than the average time spent watching by nonbroadband users, the study found.

On nontraditional platforms, YouTube remains the most popular destination for most video; however, study findings suggested that TV brands developing a strong online and mobile presence can translate their success to new platforms.

The findings also found growing receptivity to online ads. Among broadband Internet users, self-reported incidence of clicking on banner and pop up ads increased by 127 percent since last year, the study found.

The study is ninthedition of an annual report based on an online survey of 1046 broadband Internet users 15 years old and older. The report was published in October.
